Position Summary:

The Montreal Neurological Institute and Hospital (MNI) is the cornerstone of the neuroscience enterprise at McGill University. It is a research and teaching institute of McGill and forms the basis of the Neuroscience Mission of the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC). It is the largest specialized neuroscience research and clinical center in Canada and is recognized internationally for integrating research, compassionate patient care and specialized training. The MNI is a hub for neuroscience research, international projects, clinical and research training.  Our researchers are world leaders in cellular and molecular neuroscience, brain imaging, cognitive neuroscience and the study and treatment of epilepsy, multiple sclerosis and neuromuscular disorders. Over 300 graduate students and postdoctoral fellows from around the world pursue scientific training at MNI each year.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Reporting to the Director MNI, the Director Administration & Operations manages the full range of administrative and operational activities in support of the MNI’s academic mission.
  • Direct the administrative services of the MNI and provide operational management and oversight to staff.
  • Oversee Finance, HR, IT and Facilities and other areas. Work with service area managers/directors on planning and ensure alignment with the Institute’s strategic objectives and priorities.
  • Build a financial infrastructure to ensure the financial health of the MNI.  Manage operating funds (approx. $18M /year) and research revenues (approx. $19M / year) and new initiatives (over $50M/ year). Develop business plans to encourage revenue generation and assess business opportunities in Canada and abroad.   Lead budgeting process and oversees reporting, monitoring, and analysis of organizational performance metrics, and provide actionable recommendations to address concerns. Work closely with senior administrators to manage risk and draft letters of agreement, contracts, and other legal agreements.
  • Provide confidential, strategic advice, counsel and support to the Director MNI and senior administrators.  Support the administrative undertakings and activities related to research, education and hospital initiatives. Work with the Director MNI to resolve a variety of sensitive issues and work on other special projects.
  • Manage all aspects of the affairs of MNI and its Committees in their leadership, accountability and responsibility with regard to governance. Ensure McGill’s policies, rules and guidelines are followed.
  • Lead planning for near and long-term MNI responsibilities and activities and ensure systematic, responsive and professional operations.  Plan and implement changes to improve the effectiveness of the core operational areas in supporting the strategic priorities of the Director MNI.

  1. A Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation. 
  2. 10-15 years of experience in similar role.
  3. Extensive audit and management experience in healthcare organizations, preferably in an academic medical centre, research institute, teaching hospital or other similar setting.
  4. Demonstrated ability to manage multiple complex dossiers simultaneously.
  5. Strong knowledge of planning, marketing, financial management, clinic operations, institutional budgeting, grant/contract administration, facilities management and human resources.
  6. Demonstrated ability to effectively plan and delegate work, and supervise staff and work processes.    
  7. Superior analytical skills and demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment in applying and interpreting policies and procedures.
  8. Excellent interpersonal skills necessary to establish and maintain effective working relationships with key stakeholders and all levels, both internal and external, and to collaborate with senior administrators.
  9. Ability to express oneself clearly and concisely both orally and in writing in both English and in French.
