Clinical Research Assistant (RN)

This is a Full-time position in Montréal, QC posted September 7, 2017.

Under the direction of Dr. Machelle Wilchesky (Principal Investigator) and the Trial Coordinator, performs clinical nursing duties for a study funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR). This cluster randomized intervention trial will test the efficacy of a new multicomponent delirium prevention program in reducing the incidence, frequency, duration, and severity of delirium in frail elderly long-term care patients with dementia.

  • Receive specialized training sessions for the program intervention by a world-renown expert in the field
  • Train and coach frontline long-term care staff members on a multicomponent delirium prevention program (“Train the trainer”);
  • Conduct pre-enrolment assessments pertaining to cognition and functional autonomy;
  • Evaluate adherence to the intervention protocols using information recorded in patient charts and therapeutic nursing plans;
  • Collect diagnoses and medication data from patient charts;
  • Collect information pertaining to modifiable delirium risk factors, medical consultations, and institutional transfers;
  • Contact, recruit, and schedule meetings with study participants (long-term care patients and staff);
  • Must be available to commute and collect data at different long-term care facilities on the island of Montreal;
  • Minimal travel outside of Montreal for 1-week of training (to Quebec City) a possibility.

Planned Start Date & End Date:

October 1, 2017 – September 30, 2018 – One year contract with McGill benefits (with possibility of renewal for 3 years)

  • Nursing Diploma (College or University)
  • Member of the Ordre des Infirmières et Infirmiers du Québec
  • Post-graduate diploma in health-related field (preferably MSc) an asset
  • Two (2) years of research-related or other relevant work experience
  • Experience working with elderly patients with dementia an asset


  • Strong social and interpersonal skills, patient-focus, and ability to build rapport and communicate elderly individuals with dementia (both compassionately and professionally);
  • Experience in research;
  • Ability to organize workload and manage multiple tasks simultaneously in order to deliver expected results, adhere to study timelines, and meet important deadlines;
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure;
  • Effective organizational skills and attentiveness to detail;
  • Bilingualism (English and French – written and verbal).
